Telehealth checklist: can this visit work online?

Care provided remotely, for example by video, is called telehealth. Find out how your health will be assessed, where any tests take place and how care proceeds if the screen cannot show enough.

Work through the question

Keep the answers with your notes.

  • Give your location for the time of the visit.

Arizona’s telehealth registration allows some clinicians with licences from other states to treat patients here when its requirements are met, as of October 3, 2026.

Ask what licence or Arizona registration permits the clinician to treat you online. Ask how to check it with the board for that kind of health professional.

  • Ask whether remote care fits the problem.

As of October 3, 2026, Arizona requires an honest assessment of whether telehealth or care in person suits the patient’s needs.

Ask what can be assessed on screen and what would need an examination or test elsewhere.

  • Do not assume every prescription needs an office visit.

An online visit can lead to a prescription without an office visit in some cases under Arizona rules, as of October 3, 2026. The clinician must still assess your health and comply with the rules that apply to the particular medicine.

Ask what the clinician must check for this medicine, what can be checked by video and whether any examination must happen in person.

  • If video is difficult, ask about the permitted option.

As of October 6, 2026, Arizona can count a phone visit as telehealth if the clinician decides video is not reasonably available.

The allowed reasons are the patient’s physical or mental abilities, missing technology, or limits in telephone or internet service.

The clinician decides whether video is unavailable for one of those reasons. Even then, the clinician must decide whether a phone visit can meet your medical needs before prescribing.

  • Ask about consent and privacy.

Informed consent, meaning agreement once the care is explained, is usually required for telehealth in Arizona as of October 3, 2026.

A spoken agreement must go in the record; the usual protection of private information still applies.
