Work through the question
Keep the answers with your notes.
Describe your goal in ordinary words.
Make a note of the problem bothering you and the change you hope for. Include questions about approaches other than the offered medicine.
Have your current medicines and health history ready.
Bring medicine names and any records you want the clinician to review. Make a note of allergies and things you have tried before.
Ask how questions will be handled.
A national group of state medical boards advises that patients need a route for questions to their clinician after a visit; this advice was checked September 26, 2026.
State medical boards oversee doctors’ licences. The national group’s advice describes proper care. It is not itself a law; each state has its own rules.
Ask why a test is being proposed.
The national medical-board group advises that if checking your health requires a test, the clinician must do it or arrange it. Another option is for the clinician to refer you to a health professional able to carry out the test.
Ask what question the test will answer, where it will happen and who will bill for it.
Get the follow-up plan in writing.
Ask when the next review would take place, what it would cost and who answers questions between visits. Ask what happens if an in-person examination is needed.
